New Zealand South Island Private Escorted Tours from the USA

Why are private New Zealand tours so popular for visitors from the USA?

  1. We drive on the left side of the road in New Zealand. This can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before, and unlike Europe, we don’t have an extensive public transport system to help visitors get around without a car. You can certainly book bus transport between destinations, but this is far from the ideal way to see New Zealand.
  2. The USD to NZD exchange rate is excellent (for Americans, anyway!). In other words, private New Zealand tours tours are far more cost-effective than you might expect. It’s absolutely possible to treat yourself to an unforgettable experience without breaking the bank.
  3. With limited time to travel, a private guide helps maximise every minute of your stay. Because visitors from the USA often have very limited vacation time to work with, you’ll want to see as much as possible during your short stay in New Zealand. Travelling with a private guide means you can pack in as many highlights as you want without overdoing it. Instead of researching restaurants and looking up directions as you go, your guide will streamline the whole experience so you can see and do even more.
  4. A private guide offers a far more authentic New Zealand experience. Americans who enjoy travelling are often looking to go beyond the superficial tourist hotspots to discover the authentic side of New Zealand. When you travel on your own or book a pre-scheduled group tour, it’s easy to find yourself getting funneled through all the most popular destinations without discovering the true gems that lie off the beaten path. Meanwhile, when you travel with a private guide, you’ll experience all the hidden wonders of New Zealand in addition to the must-see highlights.

Lord of the Rings tours

Hobbiton Movie Set Tour New Zealand popular with visitors from the USA

If you’ve always dreamed of discovering Middle-earth in real life, you’re not alone! A New Zealand Lord of the Rings tour is a bucket-list highlight for many visitors from the US.

The original Lord of the Rings trilogy used virtually no CGI to create the landscapes of Middle-earth, so you can see them in real life just as they appeared on screen, from Hobbiton to Mt Doom, Edoras to Isengard.

“We arranged a personalized “Lord of the Rings” tour with New Zealand Guided Tours, which was a trip of a lifetime for us! High points for us were the visits to Hobbiton and the Weta Workshop on North Island, the drives through lush green valleys and along towering mountain ranges, a boat cruise through the fjords, a visit to the Māori Cultural Center in Rotorua (we are anthropologists and archaeologists), and a day of wine tasting on South Island (we shipped a case of wine back to the States). (…) This was an amazing trip, and we would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a very special, personalized tour of the country.”

Booking your flight from the USA to New Zealand

Because our clients can almost always find better deals through booking international flights themselves, we don’t include airfares as part of our New Zealand private tours from the USA.

When booking your flights out of the US, you will most likely be connecting through:

  • San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • Houston
  • Honolulu
  • New York

Most international flights into New Zealand land in Auckland, with a short domestic flight connecting through to Christchurch or Queenstown. However, there are some international flights that fly direct to Christchurch and Queenstown.

You’ll find direct flights from the USA to New Zealand with:

  • Air New Zealand
  • United Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • American Airlines

You can also book non-direct flights with airlines such as Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Fiji Airways.

When researching flights, we recommend looking at aggregator websites to find the best price. These include:

  • Expedia
  • Booking.com
  • Skyscanner
  • Kayak

However, unless you find a better price elsewhere, it is often best to book directly through the airline.

Tips when booking flights from the USA to New Zealand:

  • We recommend scheduling at least a 4-hour layover in the location where you go through customs – in both directions.
  • If you book all of your flights as a single ticket with the same airline, the airline will be responsible for rescheduling later flights if any delays occur that cause you to miss your next flight. On the other hand, if you book each flight leg separately, you’re on your own if you miss a flight.
  • Flight aggregators like Expedia and Booking.com are great for searching out deals, but you have the most control over exactly how the different legs fit together if you go directly through the airline.
  • Air New Zealand offers an excellent “multi-city” option when booking flights – this allows you to piece together each leg of your journey individually. This way you can choose which US airport you transfer through and how long of a layover you get at each stop.
  • Here in New Zealand, you will want to be at the airport 4 hours before an international departure and 1-2 hours before a domestic departure.
  • Several airlines, including Air New Zealand, offer a wide range of meal options catering to all dietary requirements. Be sure to pre-book your meal if this applies to you.

Bonus tip: Based on our team’s experience, San Francisco and Honolulu are the nicest airports to fly through when making an international connection between the USA and New Zealand! The lines are shorter and the airports smaller and easier to navigate.

Do I need a visa to visit New Zealand from the USA?

As of November 2025, citizens of the USA are on the visa waiver list for travel to New Zealand. However, you will still need to apply for the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you visit. You will also need:

– A passport valid for at least 3 months after you leave New Zealand that matches the details in your NZeTA
– A ticket for onward travel

These rules are subject to change at any time. You will need to check Immigration New Zealand for the most up-to-date requirements.

What currency is used in New Zealand?

New Zealand uses the New Zealand dollar (NZD). As of 2025, USD$1 is approximately equal to NZD$1.70.

What is the weather like in New Zealand?

The weather on the South Island of New Zealand is mild and comparable to the Pacific Northwest in the US. Our mountains are covered in snow in winter, but this rarely reaches down to the level of towns, which are mostly close to sea level.

The North Island is more humid, with a subtropical climate as you approach the Bay of Islands and Northland.

No matter what time of year you visit, we recommend bringing a variety of layers, as it can get cool in summer and warm in winter.

Do I need to bring cash to New Zealand?

You’ll find Visa and Mastercard widely accepted in New Zealand, with ATMs readily available if you need to withdraw cash. The only places you are likely to need cash are small local farmer’s markets and craft markets.

Is tipping common in New Zealand?

Tipping is neither common nor expected in New Zealand. However, if you wish to leave a gratuity for your guide as thanks for their service, this is always appreciated.

How much should I budget for meals in New Zealand?

If you plan to eat at restaurants and cafes throughout your stay, you will want to budget (per person) NZD$10 – $30 (USD$5 – $17) for breakfast, NZD$15 – $30 (USD$8 – $17) for lunch, and NZD$20 – $40 (USD$11 – $22) for dinner.

Our sales tax, referred to as GST, is included in the prices listed on menus and at stores, so you pay exactly what you see listed.
